Groundbreaking at National Arboretum

11/7/2013

Rain Underground is pleased to announce the groundbreaking for the Grass Roots Initiative Exhibit at the United States National Arboretum on November 15, 2013. This exciting initiative explores the science, history and cultural aspects of turf and grasses. In addition to designing the landscape, Rain Underground consulted on the programming and messaging of exhibit features. The exhibit creates a unique opportunity for plantings designed exclusively using grasses. Visitors will be able to see over 50 varieties of grasses in different settings and during all seasons.

The exhibit includes a green roof using native grasses to shelter the way finding station. The green roof also offers an opportunity for visitors to compare the stormwater and heat reduction capacity of green roofs with those of conventional roofs. A rain garden exemplifies how grasses play an important role in stormwater management. Agricultural grasses will be planted in the spring and fall. Several other aspects of turf are explored in this outdoor exhibit including history, appropriate care, scientific advances in using regionally specific grasses, and more.  The US National Arboretum is developing a web site dedicated to the Grass Roots Initiative and will have on-going educational and community outreach events in relation to the exhibit.
